Schnucks is moving ahead with smart salad bars.
Schnuck Markets Inc. is rolling out a "smart salad bar" experience at select stores.
The regional Midwest grocer is deploying the Picadeli artificial intelligence (AI)-based salad bar solution to 22 Schnucks stores in Missouri and Illinois, as well as its Eatwell Market banner locations. Schnucks initially announced the implementation in March 2023.
Through its proprietary software and hardware, the Picadeli solution enables full traceability of its supply chain. In addition, by scanning a QR code, Schnucks can ensure products do not stay out longer than allowed by receiving signals for the need to refill and reorder.
The AI-based salad bar is customized for each Schnucks location, using machine learning to determine what ingredients are most sought after at individual stores. The solution also offers food safety features, such as a design comprised of hygienic materials, technology-enabled shielding hoods, and an automatic hand sanitizer and bowl dispensers. Its mounting system for utensils is designed to ensure that the handle is never in contact with food, and that products are not mixed.
Schnucks applies AI to shopping carts
Schnucks also leverages AI -equipped Instacart Caper Cart smart carts, which automatically identify items as they are added to the cart using computer vision and AI. The devices allow customers to bag as they shop, skip the line, and seamlessly check out on the cart from anywhere in the store.
"We know customers are looking for convenient, healthy food options, and they’re going to love the fresh new experience of Picadeli," said Ted Schnuck, executive VP, supermarkets, Schnuck Markets Inc. "With Picadeli’s AI technology, customers will have the freshest food available to them on the salad bar via its digital management and re-ordering system. We are thrilled to offer our customers a customizable, fresh and healthy food option that complements our existing prepared foods offerings."
"Schnucks is a digital leader in the grocery space and their deep understanding of the intersection of technology, operational excellence, and high quality food makes them an ideal partner for Picadeli," said Patrik Hellstrand, CEO of Picadeli U.S. "Retailers today are faced with the unique challenge of both a tight labor market and the demand by consumers for a memorable in-store experience that drives traffic away from delivery apps and into the store. We are thrilled to introduce Picadeli at Schnucks, a well-respected family-owned business for generations, and to accelerate our growth across the country.”
Founded in St. Louis in 1939, Schnuck Markets Inc. operates 114 stores across Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
