REI to open 10 stores in 2024

REI Co-op is opening stores across the U.S. this year and next. 

The specialty outdoor retailer plans to open 10 new stores in 2024. Looking further out, it already has two locations on the books for 2025.

REI will open locations in Beavercreek, Ohio and Beaverton, Ore. this spring. The summer lineup includes stores at Arrowhead Promenade, Glendale, Ariz.; Ithaca, N.Y.; and The River, Rancho Mirage, Rancho Mirage, Calif. 

In the fall, the company will open outposts in Albany, N.Y. and Tulsa, Okla. The retailer will announce details of the three additional stores set to open this year as it finalizes the contracts.

For 2025, REI has announced two store openings so far: Durango, Col. (spring), and St. George Place, St. George, Utah (fall).

Each REI location will offer a wide assortment of apparel, gear and expertise for camping, cycling, running, fitness, hiking, climbing and more. In addition, a full-service bike shop will be staffed with technicians to tune, repair and enhance the performance of all bikes. The new Utah location will also feature a ski and snowboard shop.

“Each of these communities has an abundance of easily accessible natural places to play in addition to proximity to iconic national parks where REI currently guides active adventures,” said Mary-Farrell Tarbox, REI vice president of Stores. “We look forward to serving as a welcoming resource to everyone through our staff’s expertise and broad product assortment. As we do in every community where we have a presence, we will also establish nonprofit partnerships to support their efforts to help get more people outside.”

REI expects to hire about 50 employees at each location, and said it is commitment “to building a diverse and inclusive workplace that enables a life outdoors for everyone.”  It benefits include  two paid annual “Co-op Way Days” that allow employees to outdoor activities and an additional paid day off on Black Friday. 

The nation’s largest consumer co-op, REI has a community of 23 million members. As of Nov. 29, 2023, the company had approximately 185 stores throughout the United States.
