Klarna launches new AI-based shopping tools

Klarna is adding numerous updates to its app.

Klarna is releasing a number of new solutions that employ artificial intelligence (AI) to assist consumers with different aspects of the shopping experience.

The global payments provider and shopping platform is unveiling 13 new customer tools, including:

In-app AI shopping lens

Utilizing the in-app camera feature, the new Klarna shopping lens can visually identify over 10 million items across a range of categories and match them with over 50 million store offers in its search and compare tool. Shoppers will also be shown similar items that match the style of the pictured product. The shopping lens is available to consumers in the US., U.K., Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

Sustainability search filters

New sustainability certification filters added to the app's intelligent search and compare tool enable consumers to identify products which have third-party sustainability certifications from Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Cradle to Cradle.

The filters are available now in the U.S., U.K., Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and follow Klarna’s December 2022 introduction of a program using the Clarity AI sustainability solution to display AI-based sustainability data on electronics items.

Shoppable videos arrive in European countries

Following a successful launch in the U.S., Klarna is releasing shoppable videos in U.K., Germany and Sweden. Videos include unboxings, tutorials, reviews and product drops from brand and creators, and any featured item can be shopped directly from the video. Shoppable videos also allow creators to share content straight into the Klarna app.

The Klarna app's AI-powered recommendation engine provides a personalized video experience, with content that aligns with unique viewer interests. As a result, Klarna data indicates that in the U.S., average viewer time has increased by 60% and click-through rates by 25%, fueling further growth and customer acquisition for retailers.

In-store scanning

Klarna is globally rolling out the ability for consumers to scan the barcodes of more than 10 million products across stores for instant access to product information such as customer reviews, whether there are other variants or colors available online, and price comparisons. Using the app's built-in camera scanning feature, this feature also lets customers pay by scanning a QR code at integrated retailers. In-store scanning is available in the U.K., U.S., Sweden, Germany, Denmark and Norway. 

Cashback program

In the Klarna app, U.K. shoppers can now earn up to 10% of their purchase amount back with Klarna's new cashback program when they choose the Pay Now, Pay in 3 or Pay Later options at the checkout of retailers with active offers .This can then be applied for a discount on their next purchase when checking out with Klarna, either online or in the app. More markets are in the pipeline for rollout. 

Sign-in with Klarna

Klarna has started globally rolling out a single sign-in solution which allows consumers to use their Klarna logins for sign-in and checkout at participating retailers. This is designed to eliminate the need to create and remember multiple usernames and passwords.

Purchase protection

Klarna will offer an enhanced level of protection to U.S. consumers through  the Cover Genius global distribution platform XCover. With this feature, consumers can protect their purchases from breakdown, accidental damage and more. Customers can managing policies and file claims through the Klarna app.

Express refunds

This new feature provides faster refunds on eligible returns when purchases are made using Klarna's interest-free Pay in 3 in the U.K. or Klarna's interest-free Pay in 4 in the U.S. By providing a valid tracking number when initiating a return through the app, Klarna will pre-issue a refund to consumers. 

Gift card store

Klarna has partnered with Blackhawk Network (BHN) to offer a gift card store in the Klarna app in the U.S., allowing consumers to purchase gift cards using Klarna. Currently available in the U.S., the Gift Card Store is planned to roll out in the U.K. in early 2024. 

Conscious shopping dashboard

Klarna has introduced a conscious shopping dashboard which serves as a centralized resource, offering consumers access to a comprehensive array of sustainability-oriented products, features, and services provided by Klarna. The dashboard is available in the U.S. and will launch across additional markets in the coming months.
