eBay expands luxury consignment to apparel

eBay is making it simpler to sell luxury apparel items on its platform.

In an email to Chain Store Age, eBay said its building on the luxury consignment service for designer handbags it launched in September 2023 with a new consignment offering for luxury apparel products. The service provides users direct access to expert sellers who will list and sell their luxury apparel items on their behalf for a fee. 

How it works

• Users fill out the consignment intake form by answering a few questions.
• Upon submission of the form, the customer will be provided with a prepaid, insured shipping label. All shipments are insured throughout the shipping process.
• eBay and its consignment partner – Linda’s Stuff, a seller of luxury goods – then handles item photography, pricing, and listing. Once the item sells, the consignor will receive the proceeds from the sale, which is a percentage of the sale depending on the item's selling price.
• eBay consignment for apparel is available for select brands, at any price point, in new or pre-owned condition, that fall under select categories.Eligible apparel brands include Adidas, Aimé Leon Dore, Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, BAPE, Burberry, Cactus Plant Flea Market, Chrome Hearts, Comme Des Garcons, Dior, Eric Emanuel, Fendi, Fear of God, Givenchy, Gucci, Jordan, Kith, Louis Vuitton, Nike, Off-White, OVO, Palace, Palm Angels, Prada, Raf Simons, Rhude, Stone Island, Supreme, Versace, Vetements, and Visvim.

In December 2023, eBay rolled out a limited-time consignment concierge service in a branded bus called the "Luxe Line." The bus, which made stops  in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, provided a physical place for consumers to sell their luxury accessories and purchase new ones in categories including handbags, watches, and jewelry.

eBay secures luxury sales

Steps eBay has taken to help ensure that sales of high-end goods on its site are legitimate include the acquisition of AI-based authentication provider Certilogo and the launch of Certified by Brand. Through this program, new, certified used, limited-edition or exclusive “only on eBay” inventory from luxury watch handbags and fine jewelry brands and brand-authorized sellers are authenticated by eBay for sale on its platform.

"Last year, 22 pre-loved shirts, six pairs of pre-loved jeans, six pre-loved dresses, and eight pre-loved coats were sold every minute on eBay across the U.S., U.K., and Germany," an eBay spokesperson said in the email. "As demand for pre-loved continues to gain momentum, eBay consignment makes it even easier for users to participate in circular fashion while accessing a wider audience."

Founded in 1995 in San Jose, Calif., eBay Inc. generated nearly $74 billion of gross merchandise volume in 2022.
