Amazon uses generative AI to create product listings from URLs

Third-party sellers on Amazon can now create product listings using nothing more than a website address.

In September 2023, Amazon equipped third-party sellers with advanced AI tools designed to streamline the creation and editing of product listings. Leveraging generative AI and large language models (LLMs), sellers can enter pieces of information like product titles, bullet points and descriptions in one step, and then have Amazon recommend product titles, descriptions and other details.

The e-tailer followed up by offering the generative AI-based ability to create listings with images and a tool it developed with Nvidia that identifies product listings where the content could be improved and automatically generates revised content.

Now, Amazon is launching the ability for sellers to leverage their existing listings by just providing Amazon with a URL, which is automatically parsed by its generative AI-based features to seamlessly create listings for Amazon’s store.

This is intended to further enhance and streamline the process of creating product listings, saving its selling partners more time and effort while developing listings for Amazon’s store that appeal to customers and help drive sales.

The new capability, built and hosted in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) hosted cloud environment offered by Amazon, is starting to roll out now and will be available to U.S. sellers in the coming weeks. Amazon builds its generative AI-based selling solutions leveraging a number of foundational models made accessible through the proprietary Amazon Bedrock platform.

"We are finding that generative AI has a profound capacity to simplify the effort it takes for our selling partners to create great product listings, and we will continue to innovate upon these capabilities," Mary Beth Westmoreland, VP, Worldwide Selling Partner Experience, Amazon, said in a corporate blog post. "As we expand the breadth of attributes that we can automatically generate and further improve the quality of generated content, we keep reducing the effort needed for sellers to create high-quality product detail pages that resonate with customers.

"The generative AI tools we’ve deployed so far are constantly learning and evolving, and we are excited about the seller adoption and AI-generated content quality that we are already seeing," Westmoreland said. "Improving and streamlining listing creation is an exciting example of how our selling partners are already benefiting from Amazon’s generative AI investments, and this is just one more way that we continue to partner with small businesses to create an amazing shopping and selling experience."
