Amazon supports 'Just Walk Out' in Australia, Canada with Stripe

Amazon is using technology from financial infrastructure platform Stripe to process cashierless payments in two countries.

The omnichannel giant, which makes its Just Walk Out frictionless shopping platform available to other retailers as a third-party solution, is now integrating Stripe into Just Walk Out for retailers in Australia and Canada. 

Just Walk Out technology leverages a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion deep learning and generative AI to detect what shoppers take from or return to the shelves and creates a virtual shopping session.

Customers enter the store by using their credit card or mobile wallet at the entry gate. When customers complete their shopping, they can leave the store without waiting in line, and their choice of payment method will be charged for the items they took with them.

Retailers offering Just Walk Out in Australia and Canada will use Stripe Terminal's WisePad 3S reader attached to physical entry gates, and Stripe automatically processes the payment after the guest leaves. The Stripe Connect payment integration platform will programmatically route payments from shoppers directly to businesses using Just Walk Out technology. 

This marks an expansion of a long-standing partnership between Amazon and Strripe, which began in 2017. In addition to Just Walk Out technology, Stripe serves as a strategic payments partner for multiple lines of Amazon business such as Prime, Audible, Kindle, Amazon Pay and others.

In January 2023, the two companies signed an expanded global agreement under which Amazon will “significantly expand” its use of Stripe’s core payments platform and Stripe will expand its use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) to run and grow its business.
