Amazon marks milestones with electric delivery vehicles

Amazon is moving full speed ahead with its plans to have a full fleet of 100,000 electric delivery vehicles operational by 2030.

The e-tail giant is releasing a number of metrics about the progress it has made in its ongoing efforts to decarbonize its delivery fleet, as part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge to be net zero carbon across its entire business by 2040. This effort includes a partnership with EV manufacturer Rivian to bring 100,000 electric delivery vehicles on the road by 2030 and design a new delivery-focused EV.

So far, Amazon has rolled out more than 3,000 custom Rivian electric delivery vans across the U.S. The company began rolling out its electric delivery vans in the summer of 2022.

Amazon’s custom electric vans are now on the road making deliveries in more than 500 cities and regions across the country, including Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Madison, Nashville, New York, Newark, Oakland, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Provo, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Seattle, and St. Louis. This is up from a milestone of 100 U.S. cities set in November 2022

Amazon is also rolling out vans in Cleveland, Grand Rapids, Philadelphia, San Jose, Santa Rosa, Tampa, and Toledo. Here are some additional interesting metrics from Amazon’s electric delivery partnership with Rivian:

• To date, Amazon’s vans from Rivian have delivered more than 75 million packages to customers in the U.S.
• In addition to ordering 100,000 custom electric delivery vehicles from Rivian, Amazon has put more than 15 models of electric vehicles on the road, including delivery vehicles, e-cargo bikes, and e-rickshaws, to test and learn across the U.S., the European Union, and India.

• Amazon plans to invest more than $1 billion to further electrify and decarbonize its transportation network across Europe.

Amazon launched a pilot of the Rivian electric vans in Los Angeles in early 2021. As part of this test, Amazon delivered over 430,000 packages and accumulated over 90,000 miles with the Rivian vans.

According to Amazon, this testing enabled Rivian to improve the vehicle’s performance, safety and durability in various climates and geographies. Rivian has also completed certifications with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, California Air Resources Board, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
